Not for me

It is not for me to seek revenge,
I no longer need it.
It will arrive at his front door in the least unexpected way.
It won’t knock and ask to be let in.
Or call through the letterbox in a friendly voice.
It is already there beside him, a soft sibilant voice,
It doesn’t say too much right now, not enough to bother him,
But that voice will get louder.
That soft toned voice will become hard and bitter.
It will eat away at him little by little,
Like a wild animal devouring its prey,
Drip,
Drip,
Like a tap that won’t turn off,
It will erode away the veneer that protects
His inner sanctum, his conscience.
He will then, for the first time,
Be overwhelmed by feelings of
Need,
Love,
Loss.

Illusion

I thought I saw you today
in the distance.
Amongst the crowds in the High Street.
I was convinced it was you standing there,
staring in the shop window,
head down concentrating.
I pushed my way through the crowd
trembling and shaking like a punished dog.
Yards from the shop
I stopped dead in my tracks.
Where were you?
As always a deserted street
the crowds had gone home for tea.
I thought I saw you today
in the distance
I was convinced it was you
but the only one there was me.

Dream

Through the forbidden doors I go.
Cold mottled marble gives way to
walls shrouded with purple drapes.
Cornices carved with half familiar faces
stare down at my trembling frame.
Footprints of dead souls lure my chilled feet
towards my unwanted fate.

A threnody embraces me with its icy tones
urging my unconscious being towards the veiled bier.
A shadow falls upon the corpse as I lean to lift the pall.
Sibilant sounds escape from my pale lips
I see myself in death.
