Thoughts

Who do you think of
When you wake?
Is it me?

Or do other pictures enter your head?
Different scenarios
More important.

Have I become an afterthought,
A postscript in your life?

Time passes
I think
I feel
I yearn

For you-
Drifting away
Different scenarios

I cling -
Should I?

No purpose

There I stand on the inside looking out through misted glass
At shuddering wet leaves, hanging heavy on bowing branches.
A faded summer bloom drops its weeping head,
Its once vibrant colour, paled into insignificance.
A leaden sky meets the dull hazy earth in an obscured horizon,
Silhouetted shapes fly with intent through dark clouds.
I watch as rain splashed figures talk, laugh and link arms,
Seeking shelter under flamboyant umbrellas. They have purpose.
No one sees me as I stare through the misted glass.
Who will walk with me?
Link arms?
Talk?
I have no purpose, no intent.
A faded summer bloom
Drops its lonely weeping head.

Take me with you

Take me with you to that far away place.
Away from the noise and busyness of stereotypical life.
We can sit on the hillside and watch
as the sun chases the clouds down the valley.
Or reach out and touch the eagle’s wings
as it swoops and dives across the endless sky.
We can lie in the sweet heather and watch the sun slowly sinking
drawing its golden veil across the earth.
We can listen to the night breeze talking in whispers to the silvery grass
and watch the ghostly moon glide its way across the heavens.
Sleep will drift over us in that far away place.
Quiet will descend upon us for an eternity.

Not for me

It is not for me to seek revenge,
I no longer need it.
It will arrive at his front door in the least unexpected way.
It won’t knock and ask to be let in.
Or call through the letterbox in a friendly voice.
It is already there beside him, a soft sibilant voice,
It doesn’t say too much right now, not enough to bother him,
But that voice will get louder.
That soft toned voice will become hard and bitter.
It will eat away at him little by little,
Like a wild animal devouring its prey,
Drip,
Drip,
Like a tap that won’t turn off,
It will erode away the veneer that protects
His inner sanctum, his conscience.
He will then, for the first time,
Be overwhelmed by feelings of
Need,
Love,
Loss.

Illusion

I thought I saw you today
in the distance.
Amongst the crowds in the High Street.
I was convinced it was you standing there,
staring in the shop window,
head down concentrating.
I pushed my way through the crowd
trembling and shaking like a punished dog.
Yards from the shop
I stopped dead in my tracks.
Where were you?
As always a deserted street
the crowds had gone home for tea.
I thought I saw you today
in the distance
I was convinced it was you
but the only one there was me.

Dream

Through the forbidden doors I go.
Cold mottled marble gives way to
walls shrouded with purple drapes.
Cornices carved with half familiar faces
stare down at my trembling frame.
Footprints of dead souls lure my chilled feet
towards my unwanted fate.

A threnody embraces me with its icy tones
urging my unconscious being towards the veiled bier.
A shadow falls upon the corpse as I lean to lift the pall.
Sibilant sounds escape from my pale lips
I see myself in death.

The Dead Pool

Slowly sinking
Maelstrom of dark water swirls,
Eddies and sucks me down,
Down I go
Grasping at slimy swaying weed,
Air escaping from bursting lungs.
Life trapped inside tiny bubbles
ebbing away.
